Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a major health publication points out that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users using such treatments must be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts believe the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

Users who have stopped the jabs report a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you become ravenous," recalled an individual.

This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
